Explain Causes with Porque and Como
Porque commonly answers why after the result is stated, while causal como often places shared or framing information first. Practise both orders without confusing porque with por qué.
Learning objective
Present reasons with porque or causal como in a natural information order.
Porque normally introduces a reason after the result or claim: Llegamos tarde porque perdimos el autobús. This order lets a speaker state what happened and then answer the listener's likely question about its cause.
Causal como is not a direct substitute in every position. Llegamos tarde como perdimos el autobús is not the intended standard construction. Put como first, or keep the result first and introduce the reason with porque.
A reason can be new, disputed, or already shared. Porque often supplies the new explanation, while initial como commonly frames information the speaker assumes is accessible. These are useful tendencies, not claims that one connector has only one conversational meaning.
They cancelled the concert because the singer was ill.
The cancellation is stated first; porque then supplies the explanatory cause.
As the singer was ill, they cancelled the concert.
Initial como frames the illness before presenting its consequence.
¿Por qué cambiaste la cita? Porque tenía otro compromiso.
Why did you change the appointment? Because I had another commitment.
The accented question phrase and the one-word answer connector have different written forms.
Since you already knew about the problem, I didn't repeat the whole explanation.
Ya conocías supports the treatment of the cause as shared background.
Common mistake
- Instead of
- No salimos por qué llovía mucho.
- Try
- No salimos porque llovía mucho.
This sentence gives a reason rather than asking one, so porque is written as a single unaccented word. The question would be ¿Por qué no salimos?, followed by the answer Porque llovía mucho.
Practice
Try it yourself
Explain two delays in a connected workplace update. State the first result before a new reason with porque; frame the second shared reason first with causal como; then add one written question and answer using por qué and porque correctly.
