Show Results with Por Eso and Así Que

Results can follow as a separate conclusion with por eso or as a closely linked consequence with así que. Use punctuation and intonation to keep the reasoning transparent.

Learning objective

Connect a cause to its consequence with appropriate result markers and phrasing.

Result markers guide the listener from a cause to its consequence. Por eso often points back to a complete preceding idea and presents the next statement as a conclusion; así que commonly links the consequence more closely within the same conversational movement.

Punctuation reflects that organisation. Por eso can begin a new sentence or follow a semicolon, often with a comma after it. Así que normally joins clauses after a comma and is not separated from que.

Speakers also use entonces for a consequence, especially in conversation, but entonces can merely advance time. Choosing por eso or así que makes causal logic explicit when chronology alone might leave the connection uncertain.

There were no places left; for that reason, we booked for Thursday.

Por eso draws a separate practical conclusion from the capacity problem.

There were no places left, so we booked for Thursday.

Así que integrates the booking as the immediate consequence of the first clause.

  3. La carretera estaba cortada. Por eso tuvimos que volver.

The road was closed. That's why we had to turn back.

The full stop gives the result its own sentence while por eso preserves the causal link.

They had checked the data, so they were able to answer confidently.

The earlier preparation logically enables the later completed response.

Common mistake

Instead of

Asking the neighbour is a consequence of losing the map, not the purpose for which the map was lost. Así que states that result and keeps preguntamos in the indicative as a completed fact.

Practice

Try it yourself

Turn three causes into a short travel update. Use a semicolon plus por eso for one separate conclusion, a comma plus así que for one closely linked consequence, and contrast one observed result with one intended purpose.
