Locate Past Events with Hace

Hace plus a time span measures backward from the present, while hacía can establish an earlier viewpoint.

Learning objective

Place events relative to present and past reference points with hace constructions.

A reference point is the time from which a speaker measures another event. Hace dos años in Llegué hace dos años counts backwards from the present; hacía shifts the measurement to an established point in the past.

Hace dos años que vivo aquí expresses a situation that began two years ago and continues now. Spanish can also use llevo dos años viviendo aquí. Do not translate this continuing pattern with a simple English past; I have lived here for two years preserves the present connection.

Examples

  1. Nos conocimos hace cinco años.

    We met five years ago.

Hace measures backwards from the present speaking moment.

  2. Hace cinco años que trabajamos juntos.

We have worked together for five years.

The Spanish present describes a relationship continuing now; the natural English form is present perfect.

We had been waiting for an hour when the technician arrived.

The waiting duration is measured up to the technician's past arrival.

When she returned, we had not spoken for three months.

The return supplies the past reference point for the preceding gap.

Common mistake

Instead of
Viví aquí desde hace dos años.
Try
Vivo aquí desde hace dos años. / Viví aquí durante dos años.

Desde hace normally connects a starting point to a situation still current, so vivo matches that meaning. The intended endpoint determines which correction is appropriate.

Practice

Try it yourself

Assume the speaking year is 2026. Draw a timeline with now, a job change in 2024, and an earlier move in 2022. Write one sentence with hace measured from now, one continuing desde hace statement, and one hacía... que sentence measured at the job change. Label every reference point.
