Choose the Present Perfect or Preterite
Connections to the present and regional convention both influence this contrast. Compare he visto with vi without assuming that every Spanish-speaking community draws the boundary identically.
Learning objective
Select a past form using discourse relevance, time frame, and regional usage awareness.
The present perfect combines present forms of haber with a participle, a verb form such as visto or hablado, and can connect a past experience with the current conversation. The preterite vi presents a bounded event without that grammatical present link.
En buena parte de España, los periodos que incluyen el presente favorecen con frecuencia el perfecto: Hoy he hablado con Ana. En muchas variedades de América Latina, Hoy hablé con Ana es completamente natural. También existe variación dentro de cada región y entre hablantes.
Time frame and discourse purpose interact with regional convention. Este año he viajado poco may suggest a still-open year in one variety, while este año viajé poco can be the ordinary local choice or can evaluate an effectively completed period in another context.
No presentes he visto como más correcto o más reciente que vi en todo el mundo hispanohablante. Escucha el patrón de la comunidad, mantén coherencia dentro del relato y pregunta qué relación con el presente necesita expresar el hablante.
Examples
Esta mañana he enviado tres presupuestos.
I've sent three quotes this morning.
The present perfect is natural where this morning remains an open current frame; quote is idiomatic Australian business English.
Esta mañana envié tres presupuestos.
I sent three quotes this morning.
The preterite is standard in many varieties and can also present the morning as completed.
¿Alguna vez has probado el mate?
Have you ever tried mate?
The question connects life experience with the present conversation.
Probé el mate cuando estuve en Uruguay.
I tried mate when I was in Uruguay.
The dated visit supplies a clearly bounded narrative frame.
Common mistake
- Instead of
- Hoy always requires he visto, and ayer always requires vi everywhere.
- Try
- Time expressions guide interpretation, while regional usage and discourse framing also shape the choice.
Ayer strongly favours a bounded preterite in many contexts, but hoy does not impose one universal form. Communities distribute the two pasts differently. Accurate guidance observes local usage without describing another established variety as defective.

Adapt these four facts into two plausible four-line news updates: receive confirmation, speak with the team, change the date, and publish the new schedule. Let one speaker regularly use the present perfect for today's open events and the other regularly use the preterite. Keep the facts identical, then explain the regional and discourse choices without ranking them.
