Control Narrative Pace with De Repente

Pacing changes when a narrator pauses for context or accelerates into a turning point. Place de repente, en ese momento, and poco a poco where their temporal effect matters.

Learning objective

Vary narrative pace with markers for sudden, punctual, and gradual developments.

Narrative pace is the felt speed and focus with which a story moves. Background description can slow the account, while a well-placed de repente accelerates attention towards a sudden turning point rather than merely meaning then.

Poco a poco stretches a change across an interval and therefore often combines naturally with verbs of gradual development: poco a poco se calmó la sala. The preterite can still package the complete gradual transition as part of a finished story.

Tense and pacing interact without being identical. Imperfect forms may pause over circumstances, and preterites may advance bounded events, but a narrator can summarise years in one preterite or linger over a brief moment through detailed description.

The street was quiet and I was looking for the number. Suddenly, all the lights went out.

Background slows the opening; de repente launches the unexpected outage.

Elena read the message. At that moment, she understood why nobody was replying.

The marker ties a punctual realisation to the immediately established event.

Little by little, the conversation became less tense and everyone began proposing solutions.

The gradual change prepares the later collective shift into problem-solving.

We waited twenty minutes, boarded the bus, and left; there was no need to use 'suddenly' for any of those steps.

A routine sequence advances clearly without manufacturing a turning point.

Common mistake

Instead of

The routine steps do not all deserve sudden focus. The correction preserves neutral pacing until one genuinely disruptive call earns de repente and creates a narrative expectation.

Practice

Try it yourself

Write a five-sentence lift anecdote. Slow the opening with two background details, use de repente for one sudden stop, en ese momento for a realisation, and poco a poco for recovery. End with a bounded outcome.
