Report What Someone Said

Reported speech integrates another voice into your account. Choose decir que, contar que, or explicar que, adjust references when necessary, and preserve direct wording only when it matters.

Learning objective

Summarize another person's message with accurate reporting verbs and reference shifts.

A reporting verb is a verb such as decir, contar, or explicar that integrates another person's speech, message, or information into your account. Choose it according to function: decir transmits words, contar narrates, and explicar develops reasons or procedure.

Person and place may also shift. «Llevaré mis contratos aquí» can become explicó que llevaría sus contratos allí when the reporter is elsewhere and refers to Ana in the third person. Keep aquí or mis if the current viewpoint genuinely preserves them.

Direct wording matters when exact language is evidence, memorable, or disputed. Otherwise, indirect reporting can compress repetition and foreground the message's relevance. Never place invented wording inside quotation marks as if it were a documented quote.

Luis said, 'I'll send the report tomorrow.' I later explained that Luis would send it the following day.

The future-in-the-past and time shift preserve Luis's original promise.

Marta said that she'd got lost and a neighbour had helped her.

Contó introduces a brief story; the past perfect maintains its earlier events.

The technician explained that the red light indicated a fault and that we had to turn off the equipment.

Explicó suits causal and procedural information better than a neutral list of words.

Clara said that she lives in Perth and works from home.

Present indicatives remain possible because the reporter treats both facts as still current.

Common mistake

Instead of

In the intended context, a later reporter is elsewhere and is describing Ana's future-from-past plan. Llegaría, al día siguiente, sus, and allí preserve the original relationships. Other forms could be valid only under a different current viewpoint.

Practice

Try it yourself

Report this voice message from a different office two days later: Ana said, «Llegaré mañana. Llevaré mis contratos aquí y explicaré el nuevo plazo». Use one appropriate reporting verb and shift person, place, and time references without changing her commitments.
