Contrast Ideas with Pero and Sino
Pero adds a contrasting idea, whereas sino corrects a negated alternative and replaces it. Build paired statements such as no fue caro, sino difícil with the intended logic.
Learning objective
Distinguish ordinary contrast with pero from correction after negation with sino.
English but can hide two different Spanish relations. Use pero when both ideas stay true despite their contrast. Use sino after a negative clause when the second option replaces the rejected one, as in no fue caro, sino lento.
La estructura lógica de sino contiene dos opciones incompatibles. No viajamos el lunes, sino el martes corrige el día. En cambio, No viajamos el lunes, pero compramos los billetes contrasta dos hechos sin sustituir lunes por otra fecha.
When the replacement is a complete clause with its own conjugated verb, use sino que before that clause. In no llamó, sino que escribió, the first action is denied and the second replaces it. With a noun or adjective, sino alone is enough.
La negación debe afectar al elemento que corriges. Marta no solo leyó el informe, sino que además comprobó las cifras usa la construcción correlativa no solo... sino también/además para añadir, no para negar que Marta leyera.
Because English but can translate both connectors, word-for-word transfer is unreliable. Ask whether the second part contrasts with an idea that remains true, or whether it corrects a rejected alternative. That relationship determines which Spanish connector you need.
Mantén el paralelismo cuando sea posible: No buscamos rapidez, sino precisión enfrenta dos sustantivos. No buscamos terminar rápido, sino que el resultado sea fiable cambia justificadamente a una oración finita mediante sino que.
Examples
El curso es exigente, pero resulta muy práctico.
The course is demanding, but it's very practical.
Both descriptions remain true, so pero adds contrast without replacement.
No fue caro, sino lento.
It wasn't expensive; it was slow.
Sino replaces the rejected description caro with the intended description lento.
No llamó, sino que escribió un mensaje detallado.
She didn't ring; instead, she wrote a detailed message.
A finite replacement clause requires sino que before escribió.
No elegimos el hotel por la piscina, sino por su ubicación.
We didn't choose the hotel for its pool, but for its location.
The second prepositional phrase corrects the rejected reason while keeping a parallel form.
Common mistake
- Instead of
- No pedí té, pero café.
- Try
- No pedí té, sino café.
The speaker replaces one rejected drink with another, so sino represents the correction. Pero would need a full contrasting idea, such as No pedí té, pero probé el de Ana.
Practice
Try it yourself
Correct a confused event summary in four connected sentences. Use pero once for two coexisting facts, sino twice to replace a noun and an adjective, and sino que once before a finite replacement action. Keep every correction logically compatible.
