Add Supporting Information with Además
Además adds a reason or detail that strengthens what came before. Contrast it with también inside a clause and avoid stacking additions without a clear argumentative purpose.

Además introduces a new, distinct supporting point that strengthens or extends the previous idea. It usually operates across clauses or sentences, whereas también often sits within a clause and marks an additional participant, action, or property.
Compara El piso es luminoso. Además, está cerca del tren with El piso también tiene balcón. Además organiza una razón nueva dentro del argumento; también incorpora otra característica a la estructura verbal de su oración.
Position and punctuation make the scope visible. At the start of a sentence, Además, commonly takes a comma. Within a clause, the connector can follow the verb—Es, además, muy eficiente—but that placement sounds more written or emphatic.
No acumules ventajas sin jerarquía. Es barato. Además, es bonito. Además, es grande produce una lista plana. Agrupa datos relacionados y reserva además para el punto que realmente refuerza la recomendación o cambia su peso.
Addition can also intensify a negative case: El plazo es corto y, además, faltan datos. The connector does not mean positive. Its job is to tell the listener that the second reason belongs to the same argumentative direction.
Para comprobar la cohesión, elimina además y pregunta qué relación se pierde. Si el segundo dato no apoya ni amplía el primero, quizá necesites pero, por eso, por ejemplo o una transición temática más precisa.

Common mistake
- Instead of
- El hotel es caro. Además, está lejos, pero por eso lo recomiendo sin explicar nada.
- Try
- El hotel es caro y, además, está lejos; por eso, no lo recomiendo.
The correction aligns both added drawbacks with a logical negative conclusion. Connectors cannot rescue an unsupported recommendation; their meanings must match the relationship between evidence and conclusion.
